Mourning Guards

I have always been intrigued by mourning gaurds or tomb sculptures, partly because they have always frightened me slightly and partly because they are usually extremely beautiful.

Mourning gaurds have been used for many reasons, they mourn the dead long after caring relatives have passed away themselves, they symbolise feelings, wealth and religious beliefs and they decorate an ugly place.

Pere Lachaise is particularly famous for it's statues.
